A spider and a farmer's son
A farmer’s son watched a spider building its web and asked his father, “Father, why does the spider weave fabric that never yields clothing? It’s work is complex, but to no purpose.” His father did not reply. Years later, the son had grown up to a young man and was enlisted into the army. In one battle, the enemy soldiers pursued him into the mountains. Two of the enemy soldiers spotted him as he climbed up the mountains. In desperation, he sought refuge inside a small cave.
He was invisible from outside, but once if the soldiers entered, they would surely see him and kill him. As the young man crouched helplessly, a spider began to spin its web across the mouth of the cave. Soon, its was weaving its web back and forth across the opening. Then the young man heard the soldiers’ voices outside the cave. One said, “Maybe he is hiding inside this cave.” Another said, “Don’t be a fool! Look at that spider web; no one has been through that opening for days.” The soldiers climbed on.
At that moment, the young man realized that he had found the answer to his question.
Moral of the storyNever underestimate the work that we do everyday. While the spider had saved the young man from danger, the work that we carry out everyday directly/indirectly contributing to the safety and economic of everyone in Singapore. Every small act counts and must be guided.
